Care innovation case study

Improving quality of life through multisensory care.

Sensory stimulation can support emotional wellbeing, engagement and comfort in care settings. Today more than five care organizations have implemented SENSIKS pods for quality of life, sensory activation and decompression in care homes. In 2017, SENSIKS and Philadelphia explored how a multisensory environment could be adapted for people with intellectual disabilities and older adults.

01 · The trial

Designing the experience around care needs

The project began as a practical accessibility challenge: make a sensory pod usable by a wheelchair user while giving a caregiver enough room to share and support the experience.

In 2017, SENSIKS ran a six-month trial with Philadelphia — described as operating around 500 care locations and one of the Netherlands’ largest providers in this care segment. Based on those requirements, SENSIKS developed two wheelchair-accessible pods designed so both a participant and a caregiver could be present during a session.

Across the trial, 120 clients took part, including a fixed weekly control group of 30. VR remained optional — some used a headset, others experienced the sensory environment without it — and coloured lighting shaped different mood compositions.

02 · Measurement

Combining felt experience with physiological signals

The trial paired subjective feedback with integrated biofeedback, creating a broader view of how participants responded before, during and after sessions.

Subjective — an integrated affect grid and questionnaire completed by the participant or observing caregiver, captured during the experience. Objective — biofeedback signals: heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance.

Rather than relying on a single measure, the trial combined participant or caregiver feedback with HR, HRV and skin-conductance data to compare states across the session. TNO analysed and reported the gathered trial data after the trial period.

03 · Outcome

From trial to day-to-day implementation

The trial results were described as promising. Following the trial, Philadelphia ordered 10 wheelchair-accessible Sensory Reality Pods for larger locations; SENSIKS says these were installed in 2018.

The next phase exposed a different set of challenges: integrating the technology into everyday care routines, creating content with lasting value, and managing the operational process around its use. During 2018–2019, the focus expanded beyond the pod itself to how the experience could fit into daily care programmes.

  • 2018 · Ten pods installed. Philadelphia ordered the first batch of 10 wheelchair-accessible pods for larger locations following the trial.
  • 2018–19 · Operational learning. Attention shifted toward daily-care integration, content value creation and process management.

After the Philadelphia trial, SENSIKS says other Dutch healthcare organisations in the same segment also ordered pods for quality-of-life, therapy and research applications.

University of Amsterdam / TNO PTSD study: multi-sensory technology shows promise.

A pilot study by the University of Amsterdam and TNO found that 4 of 7 veterans (57%) experienced substantial PTSD symptom reduction after just one or two treatment sessions — using multi-sensory technology combined with memory-reconsolidation therapy.

Why multi-sensory matters

Reaching memories words can’t

Veterans’ combat training can make emotional trauma memories harder to access through verbal or visual cues alone. Synchronized multi-sensory stimulation — especially olfactory input, with its direct connections to the amygdala — more effectively activates the complete trauma-memory networks needed for successful treatment.
